Sunday Sketches -- Illusionals (D)

I recently finished reading the second book written by one of my old college friends (review here), and I thought it was a rollicking ride from start to finish!  Plenty of danger and drama and humor and just enough steampunk to be interesting and effective without being annoying and trendy.  Last week these Sunday Sketches resulted.
All the characters in her books are so vividly described and written that I find they flow pretty easily from my pen, even if they don't always come out just how I pictured them -- but that's on me, not on the author.

(You can see the other Sunday Sketches that Heather's writing has inspired in the past here.)

Commission: Park Meeting (D)

(Ack, August???  Shameful.)

Here's a fun commission I did last week through Artcorgi. I love it when Disney fans single me out over there.

Sunday Sketches -- 30 Rocke-fellas (D)

Wups, sorry, July.

Things have been busy, but it's time for some Sunday Sketches!  After we finished watching Parks and Recreation, it seemed like we should finally see about looking into 30 Rock.  I won't say I didn't like it, but I will say that it took us a few months to watch all seven seasons (compared to P&R's few weeks) and that it took me three months of a few Sundays to finally finish this art (compare to the one day that I spent with P&R).

Looking back I probably didn't need to include ALL of these people, like Angie and Hazel and Criss and Jack's entourage, but I was finally on a roll, so I didn't want to put on the brakes.  This show has a pretty big recurring cast I guess.  Also, apparently it's been so long that I totally forgot Kenneth and Cerie and (even until the last minute) Pete.  *facepalm*

From Babies To Mommy 2015 (D)

A very happy birthday to my darling wife and the beloved mother of these two:

Happy birthday, J!  We love you!

Sleeping Beast (D)

A few years ago I did a sketch that J thought would make a funny little animation. Well, today I finally made her vision a reality by doing my first personal animation in quite a long time (and our first animation post in even longer). It was fun, even if it's pretty simple. Secondary action study FTW!

Here's the original sketch for fun and reference:

Commission: A Little Mermaid (D)

Several weeks ago I was approached with a commission for a proposal.  The lady was a big fan of The Little Mermaid, and her fella knew just what to do about that.  The process was a bit delayed when The Poppy came along, but luckily his timetable was flexible.  He was a delightful client to work with (which can be a rarer thing than you might expect with freelance), and it was fun to do this personalized adaptation.  And really, it was pretty easy to draw them, they look practically like Disney characters as it is.
(The finished version had personal text in the classic Disney/TLM fonts.)

Best of luck to this beautiful couple.

Sunday Sketches -- Pawnee People (D)

These last few weeks we've found ourselves sitting around a lot during long, quiet, sleepy evenings with a newborn, so we thought it was a good time to finally check out Parks and Recreation.  Three weeks later we were all done and already missing our new pals.  Binge-watching is the best and the worst.  Anyway, here's what happened yesterday as a result:
Last time around the show du bébé was Alias, and, because I just realized that I had never posted the arts from that show after searching to provide a link, here's the character spread:
Whatever might be next?...

Sunday Sketches -- Poppy Pertinent (D)

Recently we happily welcomed a new addition to our family.  She's sweet and snuggly and has quite  a shock of dark hair.  And, of course, now that she's finally here, she's just begging to be drawn, so I present her first portrait by her daddy:
And now, keeping in tradition set when The Speck came along, here's her first unofficial portrait, beloved by nurses one and all.
We love you, little one!  You already are and I'm sure you will continue to be the subject of many arts in the future.

Sunday Sketches -- Family of Three (D)

I realized a while ago that I hadn't done that many drawings of our little family of three, especially as it was well on its way to becoming a family of four, so I did some over the last couple of months.  It's hard to quite capture this little guy's big (and getting bigger) personality, but I see a lot of him in these.

Sunday Sketches -- Disney Un-Disneyed IX (D)

(I guess I didn't post it early after all, ha.  But not late either!)

And thus we come to the close of the Disney Un-Disneyed Sunday Sketches.  I didn't do art for EVERY source material book/story, but I think I did most of them, at least the human characters and the most well-known ones.  This was a really fun project, not only for the reading, but also the drawing/designing.  I would like to color all of these eventually.
The Frog Prince (reviews here, here and here)

Rapunzel (reviews here, here, here and here)

The Snow Queen (reviews here and here)
The end!  And they all lived happily ever after.

Sunday Sketches -- Disney Un-Disneyed VIII (D)

My Disney Un-Disneyed Sunday Sketches series is fast finally coming to a close!  I really thought I would have these all posted by the end of 2014, but oh well, life happened and there you have it.  This is an interesting set of fellows, the first of which is a stretch for this series in the first place (and it took a few tries to get his look just right, thanks to J for helping me figure it out, as well as the strategic placement of props), and the third I didn't even know was based on a book in the first place.  The second turned out just how I thought it would.
The Emperor's New Clothes (review here)
Treasure Island (review here)

A Day With Wilbur Robinson (review here)
Almost done!  I don't think I'll wait until next Monday to post the last set, so stay tuned for those very soon!

Sunday Sketches -- Disney Un-Disneyed VII (D)

We've both just finished a big 30 day drawing challenge, so I haven't really had the chance even to post a few more Sunday Sketches, but we're all done now, so maybe I can finally finish posting these. This set features some of my favorites of the whole series.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (review here)
Hercules (reviews here and here)
Fa Mulan (reviews here, here and here)
And, because the final number was not a multiple of three, one bonus to round out the '90s:
Tarzan of the Apes (reviews here and here)
That's it for now.  We're getting pretty close to the end of the lineup!

Commission: Ron and Nikki (D)

Time for a little break from the Disney Un-Disneyed series. This is a commission via ArtCorgi that I did a few weeks ago for a fellow to give to his ladyfriend for their anniversary/Christmas.  (Which causes me to realize now that I've never even posted my previous commission through them...  Maybe I'll post that one first.)  It was supposed to be inspired by The Princess and the Frog, but also be (more or less) an original design.  I like how it turned out, and it actually looks quite a bit like them!  I'm always surprised when that happens.
Happy anniversary, Ron and Nikki!  This is one of my favorite Disney movies too. :)

Commission: David and Tianna (D)

A few months ago I received a commission request from ArtCorgi, and I just now realized that I haven't posted it yet.  Time to backtrack!  This was a fun project and was reportedly well-received by the young lady pictured.
