"You're a Hipster, Harry" (D)

Credit for the title goes to @obasistudios

When it's Harry's birthday you draw hipster Harry in his hip Hogwarts uniform.  I can't not keep coming back to this design, he's just so cool.

WED (D)

It was someone's special day yesterday! Guess who! No cheating.

Amazingly my first drawing of this guy.

Hint: it's fitting that the @kyle.t.webster brush I used to paint this is called Classic Cartoonist... That may actually be why I picked that one. The sketch also seemed a fitting inclusion.

Happy Hipster Birthday, Hipster Harry (D)

Revisiting last summer's Hipster Harry for his special day. This expression and attitude actually reflect my feelings toward JKR these days pretty accurately.

And now I realize I never actually posted my last Hipster Harry painting inspired by attending the Yule Ball last Christmas, so here it is:

Holy Fanart, Batman! (D & J)

A while ago the wife of one of my animation school buddies contacted a bunch of his artist friends asking them to do an art of his favorite comic book superhero in their own style to be compiled into a book as a birthday present.  I thought it was such a great and unique gift idea, and I was very glad to participate!  Although Batman isn't historically my favorite superhero, I was a HUGE fan of the animated series in my tween years, so I channeled that for this project.
I tried a few poses and ideas, but then settled at last on my original idea, which turned out I think just how I wanted it to!  I always loved when he glided into some location all cloaked in his cape.

And now, I turn the reins over to J:

A few weeks ago I finished the same 30 Day Challenge as the Mister.  One of the prompts was “A Super Hero” and it was the perfect opportunity to bring back an old, unused idea I had while in college—Batman making a grilled cheese!
I don’t know why, but this idea makes me giggle to no end.  It’s Batman!  Making grilled cheese!  I picture him coming home after a long night of detective-ing and wanting a toasty sandwich.  It’s probably for the best that I wound up switching majors and leaving the art program—all the ideas I ever had during that year were in a similar, kind of ridiculous vein.  And, of course, there’s no place for humor in ART.

This was kind of hastily done, but overall it turned out just how I always pictured it.  And I’m happy to say it’s an improvement on my original sketch from *cough cough* years ago.  Consider this a teaser for the rest of my 30 Days, which will be forthcoming!

Potter Through the Years: A Retrospective (D)

It's Harry's birthday!  To celebrate, we wore Potter shirts, had Full English Breakfast for dinner, watched a few Olympic events from London, ate cake and watched the final installment of our epic week-long HP moviethon.  That is a lot of minutes spent watching movies, but we enjoyed them all very much as always.  I decided to do a daily drawing of each of the trio during every movie to show them through the years, which would then be ready to post on 31 July.  It was kind of a challenge to age them just a year each time, but it was fun, and I really like how a lot (not quite all) of them turned out.  For all the times I've drawn these kids, I was surprised that there were a few variations among these that I had never done (like Kitty Hermione and Chess-Lovin' or Love-Struck Ron, and maybe even Prophecy Harry).

Seven magical years!  Splendid.  Happy birthday, Harry!  (You too, JK.)

What Time Is It? (D)

Aaaaaadventure Time!!!  And also Birthday Time.  After the Get Well card I was commissioned to do for my work blog was such a big hit, I was asked to do another e-greeting card, this time for a co-worker's birthday post.  It was somewhat intimidating, because the birthday girl is one of the other artists, and a very talented one too, so I knew I had to step up my game and do something impressive!  I was at a loss as to what to do for a while, but then I remembered that she's a big fan of Adventure Time, so I decided to do something in that style (though not necessarily in mine), sure that she would enjoy it.  And she did!  And the people who hadn't heard of Adventure Time and followed my link to the original short will be forever grateful, I'm sure.  So here it is!  Happy birthday, Chelsea!

Happy Birthday, Harry!

There's been a lot of Potter-related excitement in the Pen and Pencil household this summer, what with the final film being released (which we loved!), so there's understandably been a fair amount of Potter-related artwork done as well.  Some of it hasn't been worth posting, but yesterday to celebrate Harry's birthday, I thought I would try to do something that could be posted here.  (This doubles as a Sunday Sketches post, I should say.)  I have done drawings celebrating Harry's birthdays in past years, usually of Harry gleefully looking at a cake that Ron and Hermione have prepared for him, but this year I wanted to do something a little different, inspired by something Hermione said in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.  I was just a little disappointed that we didn't get to see Harry's birthday in the movie, but at least Hermione made reference to it.  And here you can see her and Ginny making their festive plans:
"We prepared a cake!"
I bet it was quite delicious.  Maybe they'll make another one for his 18th birthday.

And now, because a Harry post wouldn't be complete without a picture of Harry, here's a quick sketch I did a couple weeks ago inspired by the penultimate scene in the last film.  Big decision you had to make there, Harry.  Well done.  Though you might have fixed your wand or repaired some of the castle first... Just sayin'. (Though I guess the wands of the survivors could probably handle a good deal of the repairs, except of course Filch's...  lousy Squib.  Ha.)
